The Douglas Lions Club was chartered on February 18,1936 with some of the leading citizens of Douglas as founding members.

For 76 years, members of the Douglas Lions Club have worked consistently to support and fund sight conservation efforts and other worthy causes through various fund raising projects and service activities.

Some of the projects in the past have included annual county wide polio inoculation drives, fly-ins at the airport, door-to-door sales of brooms and mops (made by the blind), sales of light bulbs, candy and fruit cakes were held. We sponsored the Poultry Princess Pageant & BBQ and supported the Lions EyeBank in Augusta. Along with the rest of Georgia’s Lions Clubs, we sponsored the Georgia Peach Bowl. We constructed Wheeler Park picnic shelter, which was remodeled and re-dedicated on its 50th anniversary in 2007.We purchased the Veterans Memorial Wall that was re -dedicated in 2006 and have added two additional memorial markers to it in 2011 and is displayed at the courthouse. For many years, the Douglas Lions Club and the American Legion co sponsored the Southeast Georgia Fair. For the past 12 years, the club has been the sponsor of the Annual Big Buck Contest which draws many hunting enthusiasts to our area each year. We have seven fully funded scholarships at South Georgia College and one scholarship was seeded in 2010 at Wiregrass Technical College.

Douglas Lions annually, through financial and physical means, supports the Georgia Lions Lighthouse, the Georgia Camp for the Blind, Reading for the Blind and Dyslexia, now re named Learning Alloys, LeaderDog and Southeast Guide Dog programs and Lions International as well as sponsoring several local programs in our community each year, purchasing anywhere from 200 to 400 pair of eyeglasses for local residents each year. We budgeted a $20,000 donation over 3-year period to assist Lighthouse in its move to larger facility the first part of 2011.

Douglas reached out in 2010 and sponsored the charter of neighboring Atkinson County with its own Lions Club. Certified Guiding Lions from the Douglas Lions Club will help to nurture the club in its formative time over the next two years. Douglas also chartered a Leo Club at Citizens Christian Academy in 2010.

Five district governors have been elected from the Douglas Lions Club and all have helped provide strong and effective leadership for Georgia District 18B. With the re-districting of our state into 4 districts in 2013, Douglas Lions Club will be helping leading the way in this new state venture as one of our Lions will be one of the first District Governors in the new District N.As needed, many other members of the club have served as chairs on various zone and district committees over the years.

The Douglas Lions Club, that currently has a membership of 105 civic-minded men and women, is very appreciative of the support that its community extends to it on each and every project or fund raiser. This support is a huge part of the club’s success with its many deeds within the community of Douglas and surrounding areas.

Truly in every way, the Douglas Lions Club epitomizes the motto of Lions International…‘We Serve!’
